the scheme, generally speaking, adjusts the burden fairly among the different classes of the Government service. The one class which feels the burden most severely
is that of sterling paid officers who, while resident in the
Colony, are obliged for family or other reasons to make
remittances in sterling. These officers receive their reduced salaries in dollars at 18/6d and unless they have
made forward contracts are obliged to remit at the current rate of exchange which at present is about 18/33. The

A petition addressed to you has been received
from a large number of Government servants. The petition
will be forwarded to you with my observations as soon as it
has been found possible to consider the many points raised
therein.

I take this opportunity to refer to paragraph 3
of your air-mail despatch No.525 of 23rd December, 1935, and
to inform you that the possibility of reducing salary scales
for new entrants to the Government service will be kept
carefully in mind.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient, humble servant,
Caldecor
Governor, &c.
